Psychiatrists are trained medical doctors who are experts in mental health. They went to medical school and trained in psychiatry specialty with an M.D degree. They specialize in diagnosing and treating people with mental illness. Psychiatrists provide psychological treatment, prescribe medications and do procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy/TMS. They also recommend psychotherapy with a Psychologist/LMFT/LCSW as part of the treatment plan if needed.

Psychologists focus on psychotherapy/counseling to treat emotional and mental health issues. A psychologist will listen to the patient’s problems and assess the situation as to how well the patient is functioning emotionally, mentally and intellectually. They will then determine the root cause of the problem and the emotions and thoughts that the patient is experiencing. The psychologist will then come up with thought processes that the patient can use in order to deal with their problems in a more effective way. A psychologist may hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and be called “doctor”; but, is not a medical doctor (M.D.).They do not prescribe medications and will make a referral to a Psychiatrist if they think an evaluation is needed to determine if a medication can be a helpful addition to the overall treatment plan.
